Other than those events, which are relatively few and far between, such a commute isn't all that bad, which was my entire fricking point.
I guess it all depends on your tolerance for disruption in your life. Driving for an hour or more each way every day, of not being able to get home 2 or 3 times a year, coupled with another half dozen or more episodes of white knuckle driving through a two hour plus drive, and then finding my way around a flooded Minnesota River in the spring would not be my definition of a commute that "isn't all that bad" but I guess we have a different view of what that means. Talking about that hard of a commute is probably a lot easier than living it. The OP may be stuck in this situation, but my prediction is that they'll be rethinking the decision after a year or two.

Agreed....I just can't see 2 hours commuting daily, even without bad weather as something they would want to sustain here. Out east, riding a train in is quite different then driving yourself. Add in an accident/construction, etc. and that commute can easily double.

If neither of you work the standard 9-5 "1st shift" it can be done relatively easy in my opinion. Either commute from an equidistant place like Chanhassen or something would be tolerable as long as we aren't talking rush hour. Of course the St Paul worker is going to be more succeptable to rush hour since its way more urban than the mostly rural drive to Mankato. If both of you work 1st shift though its gonna be a huge sacrifice and you aren't going to have any freetime at all during the workweek, it will even cut significantly into your sleeping time when the weather is bad. Hope ya like listening to the radio and sitting behind the wheel a lot.

I've driven and do drive the metro to Mankato on 169 and it can be BRUTAL when snowing and windy and drifting all over. Last drive I did I counted 25 accidents and nearly avoided several of them. PLUS it took me twice as long just because it was snowing. That drive as a daily commute? Ha not when it's snowing or raining or storming, gee how many days is that? I think some people here just want to fight. ugh.

had you been able to completely avoid getting in those several accidents you probably would have made better time, your car must have been quite a mess by the time you got there but it was good it was still driveable.
