Hey all. I'm writing a novel with one of the characters living in Minneapolis in the early nineties. I'm not from there and a little too young to know anyway, could anybody who meets both criteria be able to tell me where the college aged twenty somethings lived? The type of guy who would've dropped out of college because he wanted to see Replacements shows. Where would he have lived?

Doesn't have to too be detailed, just maybe the name of one of the neighborhoods.

Thanks!!!!!!!!

Was Uptown too "yuppified" for the alt crowd at that point? It probably has been since Calhoun Square, but certainly there's been youth in Uptown for a while, right? Anywhere near the University of Minnesota would have worked if they went to school there.

The Wedge neighborhood in Minneapolis. Or just say Uptown, but the Wedge is more specific/accurate (it's a neighborhood within the bigger Uptown area).

Awesome articles Ghengis! It brought back many memories of those years. I still have many LP's from Oarfolk, which I started going to as a teen in 1976 because they had the English import versions of Beatles albums, which I figured had to be superior to the Capitol Records versions, since they were how the Beatles actually intended them to be.
It was also Oarfolk that introduced me to The Jam & The Clash. Some of the clerks were intimidating, while others were friendly. I was never cool enough to be a part of any scene, but i could tell this store was cool. I also liked Northern Lights on Block E.
Uptown really wasn't that gentrified in the '80s. Punks or (punkers) hung out on the patio at the McDonalds. The apartments between Lagoon and The Mall, west of Hennepin were pretty affordable and I went to several parties there. Lyn-Lake had a real mix of places, there was a rough bar called (i think) Oscars on the east side of Lyndale mid-block north of Lake. My sister lived behind the place and would tell stories of fights in the parking lot and cops getting called.

Duffy's was another popular place to see bands in the '80's. Located at 26th Street & 26th Avenue S., i saw lots ofgreat shows there: The Suburbs, The Flamin' Ohs, The Phones, The Urban Guerillas, and (i think) The Wallets.
