My friend and I are moving to Minneapolis this summer to start our graduate studies at the U. We've recently signed a lease for an apartment in Northeast and are really looking forward to it! Neither of us has lived in Minnesota before, but we really liked the area when we visited. We know that there's a ton of stuff that we didn't get a chance to see while we were there, though. So, we're wondering… what are some of your favorite things to do/places to go in Northeast? It could be anything… favorite hangouts, eateries, shops, parks, etc. We're both young males (mid-to-late 20s), pretty sociable, single (well, at least one of us is), and open to anything.

Thanks so much for your suggestions!

As far as social things, the area is very well known for tons of dive bars. There are pub crawls all the time there, some are sponsored by large breweries. Pedal pubs are in the area all the time. You gotta visit Tony Jaros and drink a greenie (famous drink) blu-ie, pinkie, brownie..... Psycho Suzie's patio on the river is huge and great, very unique bar/restaurant. Gasthofs is a German restaurant with large bar area downstairs with only German beers served in giant glasses and boots. Deuce deuce (22 ave station) is a strip club, I could go on and on, but beer and bars run the area.

During the summer, friends of mine are on the Twin Cities River Rats waterski team, they have a free show every Thursday on the Mississippi River right where Broadway Ave crosses the river. There's biking and running paths along the river for that sort of thing. These are just a few things I can think of now. I used to live in NE and its my favorite part of Mpls.

Go to the fire fighters hall and museum (on 22nd Ave.) Go on a day when your admission includes a ride on a fire truck around the neighborhood. It's a cheap thrill! I think all the guys working there are retired fire fighters who like to talk about anything and everything fire or fire station related. It's a nice way to spend an afternoon before heading off to visit art galleries or drink beer or do any one of the other stereotypical NE activities.

Northeast Minneapolis is ground zero for micro breweries in the state. If you are a fan of good beer you will definitely be happy there! Just to name a few: 612 Brew, Indeed, Dangerous Man, Northgate. There are a few other breweries very close by as well, such as Boom Island, Harriet Island, Pour Decision, Fulton, Surly, etc.

#1 Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge.

#2 Art-A-Whirl. The biggest art crawl in the United States. Yes. The USA. Period. Done. Don't let Austin wannabes claim anything different.

#3 Grumpy's. Mayslack's. The Sample Room. Bulldog. Nye's Polonaise, Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit, 1029 Bar, Keegan's Irish Pub, Elsie's...etc.

And the best food in NE? Brasa. Hands down. With special recognition for Whitey's Slow-Roasted beef (order the hot horseradish) and the Bulldog's Stilton hamburger just a couple of blocks away...

Edit: I have to say that NE Minneapolis is rich - rich! - with good restaurants. I'll add to the list above the incomparable HolyLand Deli. The restaurant that King Hussein of Jordan ordered from while he managed his country from his hospital room at the Mayo Clinic.

And, OMG, I can't stop.... Emily's Lebanese Deli.

Yeh, everyone should check out Mayslack's at least one time. My other faves are Kramarczuk's and Emily's Lebanese Deli. Her spinach pies are the best.

This for sure. So many taprooms, such little time.

And Psycho Suzi's is a gem. Love going there. Great food, great patio (though good luck finding seating!), and delightfully tacky Tiki drinks.

Wow, thanks for all of the great suggestions, everyone! You've definitely made us excited to arrive at our new home... it sounds like we made the right decision by choosing NE! Now the trick will be finding enough time to hit up all of these places (and trying not to eat/drink ourselves into obesity)...

Just make sure to bike to all these places, like many people in the city do, and you can burn some of those unhealthy calories off.

Just LIVE there for a while like I did. The time will take care of itself. I was living there when Cindbad Bakery opened on Central Ave. This was quite a while before Holy Land Deli, another place for good food. But I could walk to Cindbad and did many times. Kinda got my Middle Eastern education there. Then it moved to Eat Street in South Minneapolis.
