Roseville has many hotels like StanleyVegas mentioned while it borders the U of M and Como se area. Eagan isn't remotely close to the U. There is a nicer hotel right in the middle of campus, but I'm not sure what the parking fee is.

There's also a Ramada very close to the campus to the north with free parking.

If you choose to stay in any places in the Roseville area, I'd gladly give you any info you might want about it, being I live in Roseville.

Minneapolis Renaissance Depot is a short drive to the U of M campus (Straight shot to the U & only 5-7 mins) & has $15 parking on weekends & packages with parking included. They also have a free U of M shuttle if you request it (They will not offer).

We ended up staying our first couple of nights in the Bloomington West area and commuting to the Como and University area. I found it really confusing to be driving North into the d/t area on I-35 trying to get across the river.

I would be on I-35 and it would end up dumping me off I think around 10th St. d/t and then my GPS would wind me around the city streets until somehow I ended up back on I-35 on the other side of the river? This took an extra 15-20 minutes and I still don't know why I-35 just ends suddenly on the edge of downtown. However, about the time our visit was ending I think I see where one needs to exit onto 94 or 294 for a bit and that somehow is the best option. I'm sure you locals can do it all in your sleep but it was very confusing for a visitor.

For the weekend we moved over to a hotel in the Minnetonka - Plymouth area. I really like this area much better and found the pace a bit slower, more to my liking and actually an easier drive as well.

We left d/t Minneapolis on Sunday morning going south on I-35 only to find it funneled down to one lane of traffic which was moving at a walking pace for 4 or 5 miles. That killed a good 30 minutes.

35W north thru downtown can be very confusing. It does not end but runs parallel to 94 for a short while. 35W north and the exit to 94 east are the same ramp going to the right on 35W when you near downtown. If you stay on the left thinking you should be going straight as you did, you are actually taking the downtown exit.

The road signs are actually pretty clear but I can see where a GPS might throw you off. Sometimes the old ways work better.

Sorry about the road construction. The Dept of Transportation has a pretty good website that would have told you about that. I know it's too late in your case, but here is a link in case others may not be familiar.

Mn/DOT Traveler Information

I hope you had a good time despite the traffic mixups, and thanks for visiting!
