North Minneapolis Can Be a Great Place to Live
Sorry if this doesn't paste well - I was very happy to see this article today, and I can't help but add that my neighborhood, in North Minneapolis, is a great place to live.
Serious crime in north Minneapolis falls 15%

Barbara Jeanetta, left, and Betty Emarita snacked during a meeting Monday at Bean Scene, 2220 W. Broadway, in north Minneapolis. The coffee shop and bistro occupies a site that was once a blighted fast-food property. North Side leaders hope to raise money for a campaign to improve the area’s reputation.

While I liked this article I kind of felt like it was basically saying this in a way that seems somewhat idealistic. Sure, crime is down 15% but that doesnt mean its suddenly safe.
I do feel like Harrison is probably going to be the first to see a big turnaround and thats not because I have a personal bias claiming residence here. Trending the crime in the neighborhood there has been pretty significant declines since the early 2000s. It used to be a pretty dangerous spot.
I know that in the upcoming years a lot of development is being done with Bassett Creek. The impound lot was sold and thats being re-zoned for commercial development, and a lot of the properties along 2nd Ave North are going to be re-developed.

Glenwood is on the upswing, alot of design, interior and fashion type places are opening around the IMS and beginning to come down the street. The city impound lot will eventually get flipped, and I can't see how Glenwood won't densify. The Maternity Hosp. got national grants to clean up, and that is really helping its corner. The Camden and high northern areas of the city have always been livable. Crime is down in the entire city. it doesn't mean it is The Garden of Eden, but Mpls. has got national attention for its recent drops in crime. 15% is a sizeable drop, and there are areas with even higher drops. Heavy crime is suburbanizing, and it will happen sooner rather than later. It is far from gourgeous, but things like community organizations and ad campaigns really can help the area.

I think that crime, aside from homicides have always been pretty heavy in the suburbs. It's just easy to overlook since it is not really reported in the media, nor is it urban.
Anyways, the article that the OP posted sounds like a whole lot of gentrification. It all starts with the coffee shop!

That is not even close to being true. With the exception of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park, the average crime rate for most of the suburbs has pretty much always been around half of the national average.

I'm not a realtor music7lover, thought about it once and think I would be good at it, but I can do better with my current field than I most likely would in realty.
If I do have a bias, it would be my investment as a homeowner in the neighborhood I generally talk about (Victory), but since I don't really plan to move anytime in the next 10 years I'm not too worried about it.

Some forms of violent crime are surprisingly high in the Twin Cities suburbs, though. There are Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowedweb sites where you can Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowedcompare various cities all over the US, and even burbs like Minnetonka are more violent than I would have thought (comparing it to Kennesaw and Peachtree City, two of the safer suburbs here in Atlanta).
Of course, there are places in Atlanta (East Point) which are a Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowedittle worse. And some comparisons (say between Minneapolis Proper and Atlanta proper) Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowedcan be interesting.

I am not talking about violent crime, just crime in general, and drug dealing in particular. Meth is a pretty big problem among teenagers in both Edina and Bloomington. It is not reported because no one wants to admit to it. Domestic issues are also very common in the suburbs as well. Also, gang members and thugs generally do not do crimes in their own neighborhood, well, some crimes. If they need to steal a car, they will go out to the suburbs to get one, same with robbing a house. Who is going to have lots of jewelry in the top dresser drawer? Any one in the 'hood will know to hide their jewelry, or keep it looked in a safe. Suburnites generally feel safe and secure in their suburban homes. So much so, that they are easy targets for such crimes.

You have a point, but Edina and Bloomington kids do not do meth. That is a rural drug. Drink, yeah. Smoke, sure. Meth, no. Alot of teens in the suburbs are just bored. The big lot was nice when they were eight, but they generally want stimulating activity and cannot find it in most suburbs. This causes problems among some kids with alcohol and weed. There is more wanton vandalism in suburbs, slashing things, knocking mailboxes, et. cetera.
