No kidding. Some of my friends have cabins (lake homes) on the Whitefish chain, and that whole area ranges from moderately sized older cabins (some with boat houses built on the water decades ago) up to huge lake homes with peaked roofs and tons of glass.

When I first my husband's family from upstate New York back 25 years ago, they call them camps too. And initially I used to think thathey were like campground for boys and girls scouts retreats. Now, I know better.

I love Whitefish. It's not like it was in the olden days though. Denny Hecker's "cabin" was quite the showcase. A few others, too...

I wonder what's happened to the Hecker place... Was he able to shelter it and keep it out of the bankruptcy? Was he able to transfer ownership to family or friends? If not, have the latest owners found any Rolex watches, gold bars, cash, or diamonds hidden in the walls?

I'm interested in the area between Hackensack & Longville. (North of Brainerd, South of Bemidji.)

Looks like there are a lot of nice lakes and the prices are much more affordable compared to the Brainerd area.

The farther away from the metro you get the lower the prices will be, for the most part.

And the lakes and fishing are usually better.

We have a "cabin" in the Brainerd lakes area by Nisswa - ended up there due to multiple generations of family being there. I always like the area farther north by Longville and such because it's not so developed - more like Nisswa used to be years ago. We look around there from time to time for something with more shoreline and privacy. However I haven't come to grips with adding another 45 minutes or more one way on the drive from Minneapolis. If I was retired and not just going on weekends I might go for it. You definitely get more for your money.

I grew up in the brainerd lakes area but even so I'd say that's a wonderful place for a cabin!!
