I've seen a *lot* of houses all over the metro area in my search for a new home. 80-90% of them have the toilet next to an outside wall. Is there a building / architectural / money reason why this so, or is it just tradition / unimaginative building plans?

It's nice to have a window to open in the bath. It also provides lighting during the daylight. PLUS- it helps the pipes freeze in the Winter. Just kidding, but I like a window in a bath.

Yes, but why place the toilet next to it? Is it because builders think people would like it further from the door, I wonder.

Well, bathrooms are pretty small so it limits what you can put by a window...what would you suggest they do put by the window?

I cannot think of a house that I have ever been in where the toilet ISN'T right next to a window. Hmm.

Because it's better to have it next to the toliet than in a shower or bath/shower area where it's wet, or over a sink where you are likely going to want a mirror. Unless you have a really big bathroom, near the toliet is usually the only option left.

Plumbing..not bathrooms....the plumbing can still be on an inside wall with a bathroom having an outside wall

You can have plumbing on an outside wall---think of all the kitchen sinks with windows above them. You just need to be thorough with your insulation.

I've had a bathroom where the Shower was on the outside wall, so the shower had the window, rather than the toilet area...

One way or another you are going to have the window near the toilet unless the bathroom is large.
