Not really even "how much" snow here but when the snow falls. If it starts falling at 6:00 PM and stops at 3 AM, roads will likely be clear in time for school or at worst, 2 hour late start. If it starts at 3 AM and there are 12" by 6:00 AM, probably going to get canceled. Through middle and high school, our kids had one snow day, last APRIL of all things....now if they were still in high school they would have had 6 "cold" days this year alone.

I don't recall missing a single day of grade school, high school, or college when I grew up in Minnesota. People are a bunch of sissies these days. You live in Minnesota for crying out loud. Why does cold weather surprise everyone? It's winter!!!

I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and went to school in the 40's & 50's. I don't ever remember the school closing for the Winter weather. We averaged 150" of snow and had school on days with the thermometer reading -50 (not wind chill, actual temperature) we sat in class with our jackets and gloves on. And believe it or not, we survived. A couple of years ago, my neighbor who house is 75 feet from the bus stop, warmed up her car for 20 minutes and actually drove her daughter the 75 feet to the bus and it was 10 degrees out. I wish I had made a video of it.

What years were you in school here? I'm sure an enterprising person could do a little research to fill in your memory holes.

You may find schools were closed a few times, but certainly nothing like what's happened this year. You will find years where the temps were as cold, but none where the schools were closed as often.

The thing that has amazed me is that all the kids who can't make it to school sure can get to the mall and the movies!

Well, they go to the mall or the movies in a car that they drive or their parents drive and they aren't waiting for 30 minutes at a bus stop because their bus is late...seriously--would you have sent your kids out to wait for the bus not knowing exactly when it was going to be there?

That same car that could have dropped them off at school instead of at the mall or the movies. A late start might have been in order on some of those days, but there was not one that really required a complete cancellation.
