Already checked out the 'big' grocery store chains plus Whole Foods and Trader Joe's-- but are there any small, independent stores (especially ethnic stores: i.e. Italian, South American, Asian, etc)-- or even Amish and farmer's markets that you'd recommend? Looking for a great source of fresh produce and inexpensive yet high quality fish, seafood, beef, poultry, and pork.

Thanks!

The Twin Cities are well-known for having lots of strong co-ops. If you haven't had a chance to check them out, please do so. Some co-ops include:
The Wedge Coop
Linden Hills Coop
Seward Coop
Mississippi Market
Lakewinds Coop

Len's in Stillwater. It's been operational under different names for over 50 years--small, but not bad.

Not a fan of VonHansen's personally. We like Greg's Meats in Cannon Falls better. If you really want a great meat market, Nerstrand Meats in Nerstrand, MN (between Northfield and Faribault) Nerstrand Meats and Catering

or Schmidt's in Nicollet Schmidts Meat Market | Nicollet, MN. They have the BEST pre-made cinnamon rolls (dough--heat and serve).

Fareway Stores, Inc. is a chain but they are like grocery stores of old with great produce, great service, a fantastic meat counter--again, small but nice. Bit of a drive though .

Byerly's is the best place to get produce in the metro for grocery store shopping.

Trung Nam, Shuang Hur, Dragon Star in St. Paul and Holy Land in Mpls. are worth checking out, though I am not sure I would consider Dragon Star small.

IMHO United Noodles is unsurpassed for East Asian groceries.

Hackenmueller's Meats in Robbinsdale is excellent.
There's a couple of Italian places in St. Paul (east side) but I can't remember their names.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Kowalski's yet.
