I'll be movning in to Eden Prairie towards the end of May. We bought new construction and the home is not setup with a softener system... the builder rep said something to the effect that Eden Prairie treats the water before sending to the homes, so no need for additional cleansing. However, we looked at about 8 other homes in the area and I did see water systems in several homes (also city water)... so now wondering:
- do I need to install a system?
- what are others doing? Any issues with hard water if you're using the city supply?

Thanks for any insight.

Water overall in MN is fairly hard. We lived for many years without a softener but prefer to have one now. It's just easier on the hair, skin, bathroom fixtures, etc.

According to the city (City of Eden Prairie, Minnesota : Drinking Water FAQ), their overall rate is at 5 gpg, which would make it among the softer water in the metro I have seen.

If the water is set up, you can grab a sample now and get it tested (Sears will do a basic hardness test for free and in my limited experience, the few they done for me have matched closely with samples I have sent to labs for more thorough analysis).

Most of the people I know in EP do have them. It makes it easier to keep things clean.

I found a chart of the metro's water hardness: Minnesota water hardness chart

We do not have/need one in Minneapolis.

The city of Eden Prairie softens the water at the treatment plant so you will not need a home softener. That's why is the difference in hardness between EP and other cities that use well water.

From the EP website: "Eden Prairie’s water treatment process softens city tap water to 5 grains of hardness, eliminating the need for residential water softeners."

City of Eden Prairie, Minnesota : Eden Prairie Water Facts

Minneapolis, St. Paul, and some suburbs get their water from the Mississippi River, which is not hard water.
