They say the Minnesota economy is booming and the Twin Cities Metro area has the lowest unemployment rate of any metro area over 1 million in America. Does this mean that it is actually easier to find a job in Minneapolis than pretty much anywhere else in America, or is the low unemployment rate just lying with statistics?

Twin Cities jobless rate -- at 4% -- is the lowest in U.S. | Star Tribune

The unemployment number isn't the full picture, since it doesn't count all unemployed people. It's important to keep that in mind. That said, if it's an inaccurate number, it's just as inaccurate everywhere else too, so the Twin Cities are still probably doing the best of all the US major metro areas.

The comment section of that story is bizarre. It seems like there's a lot of people with axes to grind that are upset the state isn't doing poorly.

The best place to find a job is going to vary based on the industry and the type of work, of course. In general, though, the Twin Cities is a good place to find one.

People who see the worst in the job market generally look at the U-6 Rate which includes lots of people who want to work full time and can only find a part time job and others who are discouraged, etc. The U-6 unemployment rate in Minnesota is very low in comparison to pretty much any other Metro area.

So while the unemployment rate does not count everyone in comparison to other metro areas over 1 million Minneapolis/Saint Paul is still the lowest.

It also doesn't factor in people who are underemployed but not unemployed. If you're married or live at home, you can work and not take unemployment and still not be doing very well financially. It also doesn't factor whether or not people are working in their intended fields. That's a different kind of success rate.

Because of the booming economy in MN there is less people who are unemployed, underemployed, part time but want to be full time and underpaid in relation to their skills than anyplace in America.

Yes, there is some people who are not satisfied with their employment situation in the Twin Cities but far fewer as a percentage of the population than any other place in the country.

No, that would be Williston, ND.

North Dakota is generally lacking in professional and executive jobs for college graduates, vs. Minnesota, especially in the Twin Cities has the nations number one economy of metro areas over one million and all kinds of jobs from Fast Food to Senior Executives at Fortune 500 Companies.

Williston, ND does not have over 1 million people. I don't think it has over 100,000 people yet.

Williston is probably better if you want to show up and start working tomorrow. There is no place to live, though.

The Twin Cities are good, but nearly all my millennial cousins have stop gap jobs outside their chosen career path and do not get paid well. Thus, I think everyone is employed but maybe are not doing what they trained for.
The dream of the 90s is also alive here, so you can scrimp by as a part time violin teacher or comic book artist and still "be employed" and even own your own home, something that is impossible in most cities these days.

I do not think of the Twin Cities as the best place to just show up and expect to find a "good" job... but I could be wrong, and I do not know if there are any cities like that anymore.

I find it interesting how few people in the Twin Cities think their job market is as good as they report it is.
