For ideas on smaller-scale living, I would recommend a book by two local authors, Sarah Susanka and Kira Obolensky, "Not So Big House." It shows some examples of architecture, design, and using reclaimed materials and sometimes sweat equity, in creating very interesting structures. The second author also has a good "coffee table" book, "Good House Cheap House."

These houses are not tiny, however - appropriate for the families that had them designed and built. Say, a 600 sq ft studio or cabin for a single person or a couple, to a 3,200 converted barn near the Twin Cities for a family with several kids.

wish that some developers would build new small homes for people that can't afford and don't need a huge home.
Do you have to have new construction?
