The latest Murray/Highland test score comparison from 2015 shows Murray pulling significantly ahead. For white 6th graders math/reading proficiency was 70/80 at Murray and 55/77 at Highland. The numbers for black students in St. Paul are so shockingly low that it's hard to make meaningful comparisons if their scores are included.

HPMS has this crazy grading scheme where homework doesn't count toward your grade. You want to do your homework? Awesome! You don't want to do your homework? That is OK, too!

Math is a subject where doing homework regularly might really make a difference. I'm assuming Murray has a different policy.

I have a friend who's a Middle School teacher at inner-ring suburban school with a large Black population. He doesn't give homework because every year he has a has a group of poor Black kids that refuse to do any homework. Contacting the parents doesn't work. They either don't care or get angry at him & accuse the school of being a big racist plot against them. He's also not allowed to suspend them. He's also pressured by the Admin to make sure they all pass, to give the appearance of academic equity. Worst yet, he says what happened when there was still homework was when these kids realized that mathematically, they could no longer pass the class because they didn't do the homework, they would go nuts the rest of the quarter to destroy the learning environment for everyone else. Now there's no homework, everyone passes their classes, they've eliminated the end of year testing, so everyone graduates & everyone's happy.

Until they reach college apparently. From today's PioneerPress:

I think you hit the nail on the head, mason3000. Not much homework at Ramsey, and I think this is the reason. Happily, the one exception is math. Pretty much essential to have homework in math, and I'd have a hard time getting my son to apply himself in math if his homework was optional. We're not even looking as far off as college--many Ramsey parents worry that these kids won't be prepared for the rigor of Central where there will certainly be plenty of homework in the advanced classes.
