Many parks and schools and other community rec areas use ground up rubber tires as play ground mulch.

Do you think this material is safe?

As long as they don't eat it. It does not leach into the ground easily, it stops bullets very well (tried it and was impressed) and comes in pretty colors.

It's a great way to reduce/reuse/recycle!

Yes, however, but does not that mulch have chemicals in there? If so, are they safe for children to be playing on?

Yes, but children do put stuff in their mouths, what about if there are chemicals in that mulch?

If you're that worried about it, watch your kids. Regular mulch is also full of chemicals, especially the pretty colors, plus you know how many dogs, cats, and other animals have done their business there?

When I grew up there was sand ,and was relatively safe to fall on compared to the concrete or bare dirt.
This world is full of chemicals but the paranoia of what's in rubber tires , how about the rubber eraser on a pencil or for that matter a pencil or paper .Ever get a paper cut ,ooh nasty . don't kids use paper in school ?
Worrying about every thing isn't good for you or your kids .

The EPA says its safe, and apparently it's better at preventing injuries. I don't know if I trust that it's totally safe, but it's probably safer than heavily treated wood mulches.
