I understand the whole "American dream" thing, everybody gets the bug at some point. However, have you considered just renting for a while? I don't think it would make sense for you to buy right now with the current state of the housing market.

This is the PERFECT market for first time homebuyers. The ones that are having problems are the ones that bought in the boom market several years ago, overpaid for their house then and are now trying to recoup that value, a value that was never there in the first place.
