We are considering a move to the Twin Cities and looking for teen singing programs. Preferably not "traditional" choral music. Our son has been singing in auditioned and non-auditioned choirs and loved acapella, world music, rock, etc. He's 12. We'll hopefully find a private instructor at some point, but we really want to help him connect to a creative community. Any thoughts on arts centers, etc.?

He's also very interested in drumming. This is new for us, but he loves to drum. We'd even be up for some recreational family drumming or something similar? Any ideas where to look?

For both, we're also hoping to find middle schools that have a healthy music program. That is not the case where we are now (in California).

Many thanks!

Try Twin Town in Minneapolis; their name says "guitars," but they have classes of all types, including drumming (drumming is on my wish list, but haven't yet had a chance to sign up) and vocals. They have a lot of classes and camps for teens, as well as private lessons.

MacPhail Center is another option.

Maybe take classes at both and see if one is a better fit than the other? Twin Town is a smaller place but with a big local footprint, while MacPhail is a much larger nonprofit.

Thank you. Realized I had posted this earlier after I wrote a new post more focused on school.

You are consistently so helpful.

Thanks!

Walker West Music Academy in Saint Paul is my suggestion. The kids I know who go there specialize in jazz, but they have lots of offerings. Our Music School & Community | Walker West

Just to update folks. MacPhail has been great. Trying out some more programs this summer too.
