If you are friendly and talk with people along your route, I'll bet that you'll be offered several rides on people's personal boats that are docked on the Mississippi. We generally enjoy showing friendly foreigners our country.

And you can usually turn in a rental car in early if you happen to find someone willing to take you a good long way down the river.

So be relaxed and open to what might happen, and you'll have a great time.
