Relocating to North Minneapolis
I recently escaped the economy of Michigan, and took a contract job at Cummins Power Generation in Fridley, MN. Right now I'm living out of an Extended Stay while looking for an apartment, any areas and/or suggestions? Washer/dryer in the unit rather than a laundry room prefered, and any stories of neighborhoods and complexes to avoid would be appreciated too.
Right now my searches are tripping along the Coon Rapids or Roseville/New Brighton areas.

When people say North Minneapolis they are referring to the North side of the city proper. You're referring to the north metro, I assume. Fridley is fine, why not look there?

That's what I mean. And frankly what I can see of the amenities in the apartment guides, and the comments on 'Apartmentratings.com' isn't making Fridley look any better.

For the most part, you can't go wrong with any of the northern suburbs. They all have their good and bad apartment complexes. Roseville and Coon Rapids both have some nice looking apartments, but as to which one's have separate Washer/dryer's I cannot say. Is there anything else specific you require in making you're choice?

Another question, most of the apartments I see list heat as included in the rent, but some don't. For comparison purposes can someone ballpark how much I'd pay for heat in the metro area if I had to pay it myself?

Nikas, my dtr. rented in an *upscale* apartment building in St. Louis Park last year and her BASE rent was $1200 (yeah. More than our mortgage payments!!) and the heat/utilities on top of that ran another $200-$300/ month.
Needless to say, once her lease was up, she moved! (BTW, that is what our heat/utilities run for our 3 bedroom, 3 bath, 1500 sq ft SFH).
I think it's important to ask someone what they would average.

I live in Fridley, not more than a half mile from Cummins. I just sold the last of three 3BR 4BA townhomes in walking distance of Cummins. ;-)

"North Minneapolis" refers to the city proper and not to the northern suburbs. Hence, when folks talk about crime in North Minneapolis, they're talking about crime within the boundaries of the city itself and no the suburbs.
