Thank you everyone for the advise! I talked to my realtor about looking at townhouses in the city and surrounding suburbs. Just this morning he told me about a house in NE Minneapolis selling for 150000. The school my daughter would be assigned to is Waite Park Elementary which seems to have good reviews.

Buchanan? Your probably are going to have to decide asap, as it'll probably sell tomorrow. Unless there's serious problems with it.

I live in Northeast, which is a good area, but the house is only 720 sq. feet. That's pretty tiny for 3 people. I still would look at a townhouse, you'll just get a lot more for your money.

I'd go with a condo/townhouse in the suburbs, though neighbor noise may be an issue, and it likely has less appreciation potential.

I'd move fast on that house, unless it's absolutely beat to crap. NE Mpls is a fun area & the part you're looking at is one of the nicer, family areas in NE. Waite Park Elementary is a very good school.

Also, just an fyi that kids from this area end up at Edison High School, which is probably the worst of the city schools, so many families in this part of NE work their way into the St Anthony High School district. You might want to familiarize yourself with that process now, just to have a game plan, as there is a waiting list.

My questions is what area would be the best for a young family? My household consitsts of Myself, my girlfriend and our daughter. My favorite house so far is on the 46xx block of russel ave. My second favorite would have to be one in Saint Paul in case ave just east of Arcade St. I've also been looking at numerous houses just north of Dowling Ave and south of Webber park, around 42nd ave. My question is what area seems the best. I would love or an area that is safe and ideally an area that is walkable, although it is not nessiasry as safety for our daughter is my number one priority. Thank you!
A good rule of thumb in North Mpls is to stay West of Penn Ave near the Victory neighborhood and/or North of 42nd. Loring Elementary school & Henry High School are both decent options.

I'd stay away from Payne-Phalen, although things are on the uptick along Payne Ave.

Dayton's Bluff has some nice homes & is definitely on the uptick. If you can find a house in the quadrant between Swede Hollow Park & Wilson, from Maria to Maple, I think you'd be pretty happy. You'll want to stay close to Metro St University though. There's a new Mississippi Market there, the 'Strip Club' restaurant is there & it's close to Lowertown/DT St Paul. My kids go to Twin Cities Academy, which is a charter school on the East Side that does very well. That's where I'd look at schools if you moved to that area.

Hamline-Midway is an area in St Paul that's affordable, really on the come-up & will continue to get better as they build the new MLS Soccer Stadium. There are some quality school options as well.
