Default Suburbs with inexpensive condos/houses

I like to fantasize about relocating to Minnesota and possibly the Twin Cities, so I wonder, what suburbs have inexpensive condos, townhouses, and single family homes? Since we have student loans and no children, my wife and I would be looking for a condo, townhouse, or single family home of at least 900 sq ft (either as regular living space or as part of a basement). Is there any place in the Twin Cities outside of the actual cities themselves (in safe neighborhoods) where something decent could be had for around $60,000?

Like I said, we're not planning to actually move to the Twin Cities any time soon; I just like to think about it.

There actually are a few in OK neighborhoods ... mostly if not entirely condo conversions of aging apartment stock. Any single family homes are going to be in bad parts of town or someplace remote ... even the "handyman specials" if in safe neighborhoods are going to be out of your price range.
