I dont know, but eveyrone i know calls it POP, but I just cant... I went to visit family in San Diego once and I asked for a pop, and people were on the floor laughing....Since then I too notice how elementary it sounds compared to Soda. Thats all.

Just having a little fun is all. No worries. Pop, soda, whatever you call it, people figure it out.

I think it's an expression. Like in German communities the use "ach".

The way I've always heard and used it, Uf-da is an expression similar to "Oh, My!' "Oh dear" or "goodness gracious!" but it has less syllables than the later and covers a lot more territory than all 3 of those expressions combined.

Uff-Da is one of my Dad's favorite expressions. "Oh Boy" comes to mind as one way to use it. My Dad was very disappointed when they went to Sweden a couple years ago and no one had heard that expression either. I have no idea where it came from, it must be some version of something else that has morphed over time??

Wikipedia has some thoughts on the subject. It appears to be Norwegian in origin, not Swedish.

I never thought that Uff-da was of Scandinavian origin, but more or less a polite and non-offensive way for church ladies to say Holy Sh*t!.
Hot dish is pretty much a Minnesotan term and it is known as a casserole everywhere else.
Soda, pop, who cares! I grew up in California and call everything coke, "Hey, what kind of coke do you want?" "A 7-Up would be cool."
My mom calls it so-der.

I always thought that "uff-da!" was scando-goysha for "oy gewalt!".
