northeast
i'm moving to minneapolis this summer, as i said in my thread "uptown rents." i'm aware uptown is pretty spendy so i'm wondering if northeast is better or worse rent-wise, also crime-wise. i've always felt decently safe in some fairly sketchy areas of south mpls...should a 20-something white guy go biking alone around northeast? all the artsy types are saying it's the new uptown...

Northeast is pretty safe and rent there will on average be a little lower than uptown...at least in my experience.

NE isnt bad in any neighborhoods really. Some obviously better than others. Marshall Terrace and Bottineau tend to have the most crime but even there its the occasional stick up at worst. Heading down Lowry NE into you cross Central, most of it looks like a dump.

actually, if you look at rents all over minneapolis and the metro in general... the rents in desirable areas like uptown really aren't much higher. There are some high end places in and around uptown, but that's because it attracts that type of crowd. it is certainly not exclusively wealthy by any means. you might get less for your money in uptown (limited parking, older units, etc), but if location is your main concern its really not that much more to live there if you look around. lots of places in the 600-750 range.

Over the years Northeast has become the new mecca for the young and trendy. It was (still is?) attracting a lot of artists With that came the eventual raising of rents and the inevitable gentrification. Northeast is not as cheap as it used to be.
Uptown, with the exception of a few blocks and buildings, is not as expensive as people think.
You'll be safe riding a bike. A lot of young white people are doing it.

If you're going to school in Brooklyn Park I don't think there would be a convenience advantage of living in Northeast as opposed to South. It'd probably take the same amount of time when all is said and done.

sure there would. Most of the exiting/entering the city traffic and congestion tends to be where 94 meets Lyndale/Hennepin and 35W. If you're in NE its easy enough to hop on Lowry, follow it to Washington, head up to Dowling and follow 94 to 252.
