What neighborhoods are considered safe and affordable in Minneapolis and St Paul?

If you're looking for apartments, St. Paul is generally a little cheaper than Mpls. and a little safer if you're looking within the city limits. In St. Paul, the Highland, Mac-Groveland and Merriam Park areas all have a lot of rentals that are somewhat reasonable and the crime rate is low. They have easy access to the freeways also. The Hamline-Midway area is also reasonable but the crime rate is a little higher than the other areas I mention but still not bad compared to other cities.
If you're looking for homes to purchase, the Highland, Mac-Groveland and Merriam Park areas are rather pricey. The average home was built somewhere between the 1920's and 1940's and prices start around $280 - 300k. Homes in the Hamline-Midway area are slightly less. Most of these homes are one or two story with attic.

Single retired professor with dog--I'm looking for a scenic neighborhood/area in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area--like areas with character, dislike suburban sprawl. Would prefer to rent, could go up to 2,000/month. Thanks for any suggestions.

The stock answer would be the Linden Hills/SW Minneapolis area, but I think St. Paul has more distinctive neighborhoods with a greater sense of character and there are a lot of unique neighborhoods - Minneapolis is a city, St. Paul is a collection of neighborhoods. Others could give a more detailed reply but you could start with the prospect park, como, highland, summit, & St. Paul campus areas. $2,000/month is above my range but you shouldn't have any problems in any neighborhood (well, except for the mansions along Summit avenue...).

I can't think of too many places that you couldn't live in for $2000, and since the entire city was built out before the war, there aren't places that don't have character. To decide on the area that best fits you, consider if you want a more urban area, or a quieter area. Do you want to live in a house/duplex or a large apartment building? Do you want to be near a major bus route? A diverse area, or a homogenous area? We should be able to better direct you if some of those factors are considered.

Actually this one is better, it provides a street map with it as well. I thought these would help in terms a reference.

Prospect Park I think would work best if you're retired. Nice views and quiet
