We just moved to the Lowertown area in Oct of 07 and really like it. Basically its all renovated warehouse lofts and condos, mixed in with artist co-ops of the same style (but much grittier). Some notable features of Lowertown:
- Mears parks - beutifully landscaped park, has free live music every Thursday in the summer.
- Farmer's market, best damn bagel sandwiches you'll ever have (and all those vegtables and things)
- Nearly every building is historic and a treat to live in.
- Easy access to 94/35E/52
- Very clean

I suppose we "should" like it because my girlfriend and I are both "young professional"/"yuppie" types.

It really depends on what you want. We knew we didn't want all the traffic and "action" of Minneapolis, but didn't want plain boring suburb apartment living either. Really, day-to-day most people go to work and come home weekdays, and go out weekends. Its not great that the choices for going out are limited downtown St Paul, but we do have our choice of several bars & restaurants within walking distance. Everyone is friendly, and everyone seems to be there for the same reasons so its easy to make new friends.

Its pretty easy to spot the people coming in on the weekends from other areas, and honestly I prefer if they went to Mpls instead. I'd prefer to go to a party than be the host. If any of this sounds appealing, you'll like downtown saint paul.

I would still consider Lowertown one of the more "happening" parts of downtown and my personal favorite. It can be busy but it's still pretty laid back which is what I like about it. They opened a Bulldog on the northeast side of Mears Park a few months ago (which always seems hopping) and I believe there's a tequila bar coming next door sometime soon.

the biggest problem with St.Paul is that it is too close to Minneapolis
