Default Moving From San Diego to St. Paul

Hi everybody, well first off I am a male 18, going to be 19 this year and am planning on going to school in St. Paul. Right now I live in San Diego. The school would be on Exchange Street East in Downtown St. Paul I think. (zip- 55101) And I was wondering how the Neighborhoods are there. should I try to find a place in that specific area? I would like to stay in a safe area of course. I dont mind commuting about 20-25 min to get there. could you let me know about what areas would be safe and reasonably affordable ($800-1100 per month ) right now my main concern is a safe environment where I shouldnt feel threatned, Ill have plenty more questions about minnesota as I figure more out. Thanks for all your help.

There are a lot of apartment buildings along and near to Grand Avenue in St Paul that cater to students. Grand Ave is pretty close to downtown depending on which end you live at and whether you take the bus (#3), bike or drive. It's a good neighbourhood, fairly safe, lots of shops, bars and restaurants, good nightlife and plenty of fellow students or other residents to hang out with. It can get noisy during the Summer with everyone out enjoying the good weather and various street festivals, but that might add to the charm.

I would fly in and really check it out before commiting anything... I've heard mixed things about alot of these music programs that have popped up in recent years... I believe it's a for-profit school so sometimes the line can be blurred between sales pitch and academic advice.

For the amount you are willing to pay for rent you should be able to rent a very nice place. Most areas in St.Paul are generally safe. Hope you enjoy it here.

No, but depending on what you want to major in I was going to suggest attending MCTC for the first two years and then transferring. MCTC is a community college but don't let that fool you, they have a Sound Arts program that is top notch and you will save yourself about $30,000 in the process.
