Moving to Minneapolis
I know there are a lot of posts like this, but everyone's situation is a bit different, so I would appreciate it if someone could help me out here.
I'm one year out of college and I may be moving to Minneapolis soon due to a new job. I am looking for apartments close to where I'll be working, in a safe area.
The company's office is located in the IDS Center (80 S. 8th Street). I would like to be within walking (maybe bicycling) distance from the office.
Basically, the top concerns for me are:
1. Walking (Bicycling) distance from IDS Center
2. Safe neighborhood
3. Off-Street parking
My price range probably maxes out at about 900 per month, and I'm looking for a 1BR apartment.
Thank you.

I would look for something in Whittier or the Loring Park area, although if off-street parking is offered in either area you may have to pay extra for a spot.

NE Minneapolis and Longfellow would both be very convenient quieter locations for a downtown commute. Phillips and Powderhorn are also very convenient for people working downtown but many people on here will argue that they are both a little rougher. I've lived in Powderhorn since late April and love the convenient location. You may be able to find a downtown loft in the $900 range. I would look around on craigslist and startribune.com and try searching around on the internet. You should be able to find available downtown lofts for rent without too much difficulty.

Look across the River at the Marcy Holmes neighborhood or near St. Anthony Main. You can still bike/bus very comfortably but you are also near Kowalski and restaturants.

I would consider the Warehouse District. Most of the buildings are newer, so it is easier to find off-street parking. The area is safe. The problems in that area come mostly from people at the clubs, bars, et cetera in the area. The new Twins stadium is being built right now. It is a little more expensive, though.
Slig, even I would argue against Phillips. It is not walkable to downtown, and I sure as hell wouldn't want to bike through it every morning. If the person needed a $500 apartment, maybe. But based here, no.

if youre working in the IDS you should be able to afford more than 900 a month otherwise youre wasting your time. Im 2 years out of college living downtown in a 1 bedroom (church hill apartments) and theyre on the skyway, you could probably wrangle a 1000 dollar 1 bedroom here, there is a free lot but spots are scarce so i pay like 86 a month for a spot in the garage, we have a dry cleaner, liquor store, movie store and grocery store on site, and its on the skyway so you could get to the IDS indoors with out having to worry about the cold. google the church hill apartments, one disclamer, our elevators are super slow, im pretty sure they're run by hand
