How much time is needed to get comfortable in Minnesota?
Hi everyone, I'm moving to Minnesota in the fall to attend the graduate school at UMN and was wondering how much time it will take me to find an appartment, get a general understanding of the city, and to buy all the stuff I will need.
I'm thinking maybe I could fly out sometime in July to have a look around, but I don't know if that will be helpfull enough to be worth the cost. Any advice would be helpful
thanks!

Hi Brittney with two Ts! I can't give you an exact time, nor can I give you an estimate, but I will say this: it all depends on your willingness to get out and get to know Minneapolis. Many grumpy bears come to Minneapolis because they were "forced to" and end up hating it. Don't be like them. Shop around, walk around Lake Calhoun, and live a little. I am sure you'll love Minneapolis in no time flat.

Come here in the next few months, when the weather is generally terrific, and you'll get to know people and places, so when the brutal winter sets in, you won't feel like leaving right away. I moved here in March 1990, so I had 6-8 months to get acclimated to the weather/people/job & housing markets, etc, and by the time winter arrived, I had a new girlfriend (now my wife)

Somebody suggested this to me on a different thread, and it has been really useful... You can look at different parts of town with googlemaps.com; using the "street view". You can "drive around" online, looking at different locations around the US.
If you are interested in a certain area, you can type in the address and look at 360 degree views, from the street level. It's pretty neat.
Here's a link for views of The University of Minnesota (click on street view). university of minnesota - Google Maps

The Google Street view is pretty good. Another option is the 'birds eye view' on Live Maps UM on live maps
They're photos taken from a low altitude airplane, much better than satellite photos, but not ground level like Googles.
