Homestay for high school student in Minneapolis
Hi,
Our 16 year old daughter wants to go to high school in Minneapolis. Her preference is Southwest high school, but will consider Patrich Henry or Washburn high school (school with IB program). Our daughter is quiet, studious, friendly and easy going.
We are looking for a room to rent in a good family close to the high school mentioned above starting Sept 08-June 09. We could afford $600-700 per month with meals (lunch will be at school).
Please share any information you may have.
Thank you.

You're offering somebody $600-700 a month to take care of a 16 year girl? I'm sorry to say that it is going to take a miracle worker to take on such a task. I would recommend talking to local churches, synagogues, temples or whatever religion you are as that would be your best bet.

Where do you live and why are you willing to let your 16 year old live with stranger to attend a high school in Minneapolis? Just wondering what the story is behind this?

The terminology you wanted to use was "Foreign Exchange Program". It seemed to us that you were an American family that wanted to send their daughter to live with a local family, which would be borderline illegal at best. I know there are programs in the area, and you would probably want to start by contacting the individual schools through the Minneapolis Public Schools. Usually, you would host an American student attending the school that your daughter would attend. Depending on where in Asia you live, this could be very easy or pretty difficult.
Also, Patrick Henry and Washburn are only in the stages of beginning an IB program, South and Southwest High Schools would be a better bet in my opinion.

That's neat that your daughter chose Minneapolis . I agree that contacting the school directly is a good move - there may be interested families who have a child that currently attends one of the schools which might be very helpful. However, I just wanted to make a correction to Minnehahapolitan's statements - to my knowledge South doesn't have a formal IB program (instead they have what is deemed "Open @ South" I believe), and Patrick Henry High's IB program has been around since 1987 ( Small Learning Communities).
Here is a link where you can compare high schools http://highschoolchoice.mpls.k12.mn....ml?browse=True. We live very close to Henry High and have been very impressed with their teachers, administration, and community engagement efforts. Of note, Henry is MUCH more diverse than Southwest High - 35% of Henry High's students are Asian-American (compared to 5% at Southwest) and there are numerous SE Asian/ Hmong activities and events that regularly go on at the school - not sure if this would be a factor in your decision or not, but besides being a potentially great learning experience, the increased diversity could possibly help your daughter to feel more at home and/or integrate a little easier into her surroundings. And the neighborhoods right around Patrick Henry are similarly nice places to live - they aren't as pricey or prestigious as areas around Southwest, but it's a very nice area.

Thank you so much for the information, this is really helpful. We will explore all the possibility. Even though we have never been to Minneapolis but we heard only good things about it. Thanks again for your very kind assistance.

If you want your daughter to survive, make sure she doesn't go to Henry, North or Roosevelt. Those schools are hotbeds of gang activity.

As much as I'm trying to restrain myself from feeding the troll's flames, this post simply is not true - the poster is stereotyping the schools that happen to be some of the most diverse in the area, and anyone who knows anything about Minneapolis Public Schools will tell you that Henry High's quality of education is right up there with Southwest.
