In response to TornadoAlley's question if this was only in the northern part of the city/metro?, T.S. writes:

The local schools are pretty good (although there are some to avoid--I wouldn't send your kids to schools over in North Minneapolis, though that's just my opinion).
Avoid North Minneapolis, as I mentioned before, it tends to be the most dangerous area of the city. In terms of Minneapolis neighborhoods, I went to school over in Southwest Minneapolis, and thought that was a great area for schools--the school I went to offered AP and IB courses, and the area itself was very nice as well (although I myself lived over in SE Minneapolis near St. Paul)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or perhaps a better statement might be that ugliness is in the eyes of those that have never beheld....from their own statements, it seems that none of the persons commenting above on North Minneapolis have any real experience or knowledge of this area of the city. And in my experience on this forum, those that blanket stereotype any area, not just the northside, almost always don't.
It actually really saddens me to see that so many people (and I'm talking in general here, not just the folks above), with such little knowledge of something, can on one hand be so impressionable to wholeheartedly believe a removed and third person perspective in which they hear something, yet on the other hand be so brazen as to give advice under the pretense of having expert knowledge on a subject to persons on a public forum.
I would never come on here and talk about what a high rate of violent crime/ murders there has been this year and especially in recent months in SOUTH MINNEAPOLIS, far exceeding that of North Minneapolis, and proceed to tell persons that, because of this, they should avoid all South Minneapolis areas at all costs. This is because I know that South Minneapolis, like North Minneapolis, is a very large geographic area with a very large diversity in neighborhoods - it, like North, posseses some neighborhoods that have a high concentration of poverty and crime, and other neighborhoods that are beautiful, well-kempt, and very safe.
Similarly, I wouldn't come on here and talk about how I always hear about people from Anoka/ Coon Rapids as being small-minded, uneducated, bigoted, hick-like, etc., or the recent spate where groups of teenagers went on mugging sprees throughout the city (I guess this was Coon Rapids), as I know people that live in Anoka County who are actually very open-minded and well-educated, and I know that, in general, not all of their teenagers like to go on big mugging sprees.
I just wish others would return the same courtesy. As a North Minneapolis resident, I live in what I consider to be one of the nicest, friendliest, safest, greenest, wellest-kept, and convenient-est neighborhoods in Minneapolis and love being here. When we have kids, they will go to some of the top schools in the Metro (not to mention the
nation) and be able to walk or ride their bikes just a few blocks in order to do so. And as far as what very little crime there is here (again, one of the safer neighborhoods Minneapolis-wide) - I'm not so worried as I know that I have an excellent network of friends and neighbors that will keep an eye out for us and the rest of the neighborhood, just as we would do for them.
And Robbinsdale? For the good of the group, T.S., please get your facts straight...
