The station should be OK, but that area is the main place where the City's homeless congregrate. I.E.; Don't let a panhandler distract you while someone else gets your wallet.
In spite of my recent rant on the cost and level of subsidization of the Light Rail Train (on another thread on this forum), as others have mentioned it will be the easiest and least (immediately) expensive way to get downtown. From 5th and Hennepin, if you don't feel like walking your pass on the train will allow you to transfer for no additional cost to a bus on Hennepin. Though you should ask the driver, I believe just about any bus traveling south on Hennepin will take you down the 7 blocks to the Greyhound station.

No, 7 blocks isn't all that much - but if you're carrying luggage it may be inconvenient.
