This is great information...And thanks for the property tax info! Where I live now, I pay 2.5% on appraised value, which is just crazy. It's good to know that I would probably actually SAVE money in MN on the property taxes, which would make up for the higher state income tax. While I'm on the subject of taxes, does Minneapolis or any of the immediate 'burbs like Edina or Eden Prarie carry any sort of regional income tax that anyone's aware of? When we moved into our current house, we were unaware that the city participated in an additional 1.5% in REGIONAL (UGH) income tax, collected separately from city and local taxes taken from our paychecks. I'd like to avoid that happening again if I can!
I am going to take a look at all the neighborhoods suggested above. Thank goodness for Realtor.com!

I used that as a resource until I got my own realtor who gave me access to realtor reports he created with my requested specifications. The reports realtors have access to are far more indepth and unbiased than that website.

No municipal income tax that I am aware of in any metro cities.
State Income tax will range depending on income, average is about 7%.
Property taxes are set by county, but city stuff is also factored in. I would suggest 1.1% is a good guess for areas you are looking at.
State sales tax is 6.5% with another .15% tacked on for Hennepin county for new Twins park. Food and clothing are exempt, which is nice. Downtown Minneapolis also has another tack on metrodome. YOu can look that up as it is a bit more complicated and not likely to affect you that much. One oddball thing is an extra .5% on car leases if you live in Minneapolis.
I had zip code 55410, which trickled across Edina and Minneapolis. Nice for Insurance rates.

Just a quick note - I've never liked realtor.com in the past....I've always found it helpful to find a real estate search website by googling "MLS search by street address" (and then the city/state) if you're looking for a home in a particular neighborhood within a larger city - that way you can type in the names of streets in a neighborhood you're looking at, and usually websites with this function also have the ability to search for homes for sale by zooming in on a map of the area (otherwise you're usually bound to a city or a ZIP code which can be a very large geographic area). Good luck-

You all have been hugely helpful to me. I can't thank you enough. I'll probably be finding out in the next 2 weeks if we'll be moving, and having actual RESIDENTS provide info has been so vastly better than just relying on random websites (especially city websites, which are of no help at all) to try and get a picture of what I may be dealing with. I'm excited! Thank you again for all of the info, I really appreciate it.

Are there any neighborhoods that would be considered somewhat unsafe, or that you'd just generally caution against for safety reasons?

YES!!!!! Every neighborhood north of downtown is absolutely horrible. But, you are looking at the South. Bad neighborhoods such as Powderhorn, Phillips, Nokomis, etc.; Get at least a murder a week and multiple robberies and burglaries daily.

Some of the areas north of downtown are bad, but quite a few are safe and clean communities that nobody would have any problem living in.
Phillips had four murders in all of last year, so I suppose you are only off by 48. Nokomis, seriously?
You have no idea what you are talking about, do you?

You hit the nail on the head Minne, and call me paranoid, but sometimes I think people from the suburbs create fake accounts where they pretend to live in the cities proper as a way to try and fake some credibility with the trolling nonsense they spew on here - and I agree with the suggestion to close thread - this person also seems to like to dig up very old/ outdated posts.
And by the way, my North Minneapolis neighborhood had ONE nonviolent crime last week - I believe it was a garage burglary.

I would say close the tread as well. Clearly inaccurate info and most likely meant to troll up some hate. This burbs vs. city stuff is pretty weak. What was it the other day? Andover does not fund the schools, when the truth is 20% of Andover is in St. Francis district where the bond was rejected, and 80% is in Anoka Hennepin. Despite that, some comment had to be made bashing Andover as a whole.
I would really like to see this trend of every thread getting hijacked and turned into the burbs suck or Minneapolis is a sess pool stop.
