SW Minneapolis
I'm moving to Minneapolis and rented an apartment in the 5600 block of Xerxes south. I walked around the neighborhood, and it seemed ok, until I walked south on Xerxes. It seemed to change quite a bit going south to 62 (looking more sketchy). Walking north seemed better. Anyone familiar with this neighborhood have thoughts about a single woman walking around at night in that neighborhood?

You'll be fine. Your area is mainly rental units so it's just different than other areas of SW Minneapolis--and it is right on the border of Richfield. You'll find that most of the main avenues are rentals (Penn, France...).

Yeah, France........Ave that is. Thanks for the thoughts. I know going north is a good area, but was concerned with south on Xerxes between 57th and 62nd. This is also on the border with Edina to the west, so in that direction, it's fine. I don't know anything about Richfield.

There are alot of rentals south on Xerxes, but they don't create a problem. You would be safe walking along there at any time.

It's just an area that doesn't look as nice since most units are not owner-occupied. There is not an increased personal-safety risk. Crime is quite low in the area.

Thanks for all the positive responses. I'm packing as I type, and will be driving out next week. Very excited! The Twin Cities is a great area.

Not to put a damper on your parade, but I wouldn't walk anywhere in that area or elsewhere alone at night, unless with a dog you know will protect you. everything looks good for a while, but all it takes it once. Don't go alone and you will probaby be okay - from a been there - done that kind a girl.....

Thanks for the heads up. Are you talking specifically about the 57th and Xerxes South area of Minneapolis, or are you offering advice in general for a woman walking alone at night? I live in an apartment and don't have a dog, but I have underground parking, so when I come home at night, I don't have to walk outside the building to get to my apartment.
However, my initial question was about the area in general, which looks a bit sketchy to the south on Xerxes and great to the north. I will be cautious after dark in any case. I don't plan to walk around alone at night in that area, and I don't do it here in SE Michigan. Not many places left where women can do that safely, unfortunately.

xz2y - That was a generalization for pretty much anywhere, no matter what the neighborhood is like, a single person walking is a target for the token weirdo. I don't think I would trust the dog either . If you aren't planning on strolling in the wee hours, you should be fine. Not sure what south of there is like now, but a few years ago was close to the crosstown (62) and getting into the freeway on and off traffic and more commercial areas....
