How 'gay-friendly' is Minn/St. Paul?
My girlfriend and I are considering moving to MN in a few years. I'm curious how gay-friendly it is.
We currently live in Memphis, TN, and we are really tired of being here - schools, politics, crime -- it's all just going downhill. And it gets REALLY hot in the summer. We want to move north, where we can experience different seasons.
If you were gay, is there any particular part of town you'd live in?
Any comments?
Thanks!

I'm not gay but several of my neighbors and acquaintenances are...if I was gay and could choose anywhere in the state of Minnesota to live, I'd choose Minneapolis proper. I'd say it's the most gay friendly and has the highest number of gays of pretty much anywhere in the midwest.

Loring Park area has always had a greater percentage of gay/lesbians. However, we tend to live pretty much anywhere in the city.

I second that, and would add that the nice thing about the gay community in Mpls. is that it is well integrated into the social fabric of the rest of the city. There aren't too many places in Mpls. proper (or most suburbs, for that matter) that would be uncomfortable for you if you moved to them.

You're gay, I'm straight, but what binds us is the cold.
I doubt you'll feel out of place here.

As a gay man living in the south I can relate to how someone would want to leave, both due to the extreme heat down here in the summer and the attitude you sometimes see towards gays. I live in NW Georgia and moving north definitely sounds good to me as well. I have researched the Minneapolis area and for many different reasons it's appealing.

Minneapolis is a great place to be gay. I'm not. But have friends and neighbors that are. I live downtown and never see any discrimination.

For what it's worth, there're 8 glbt bars in the metro area right now.
