Hi, all. I've been offered a job in Plymouth starting in 3 weeks. I know nothing about MN. Any advice about where to live in the city of Minneapolis? I can handle a commute, but would like to keep it under an hour. I'm 32 and single, a renter. Any help or advice much appreciated!

Plymouth is pretty good area. If it were me, I would would maybe look out around lake Minnetonka for a rental. There are some out that way, and not that far to Plymouth. Kinda depends on what it is you enjoy and value doing with your time off and budget is always a factor.

Hey Jilly,
Believe it or not, it'd be nice to know where you're coming from. It can help us direct you in a place where you will feel comfortable!

Sorry, all. I currently live in Chicago, in the Wicker Park neighborhood. Looking for a place with shopping, night life, etc, but not looking to spend more than $800 for a 1-2BR a month for rent. Thanks!

The closest areas with nightlife would be Uptown and Downtown. There are more choices than that, but Uptown would be Mpls.' closest answer to Wicker Park. Downtown Mpls. would be a more comfortable place to live than the Loop, IMO.
These don't create the greatest commutes, but they are manageable. They certainly shouldn't take more than an hour.

I will throw my vote in for Saint Louis Park (on the side close to Uptown).

For a 30 something like yourself, St. Louis Park would be great. Close drive, and cheaper than surrounding areas (maybe).. Youd fit right in there too if your last name ends in STEIN or WITZ or BERG... Just a joke people, dont get offended.

Rental building styles are very different here than in Chicago (I rented in Wicker Park and Printer's Row then owned in East Village). The buildings are just different and the multi-unit buildings just don't have much style.

I'd look to rent in a duplex around Lake Calhoun somewhere--not necessarily just in the middle of Uptown. If you'd prefer a new, larger building with amenities, the Excelsior & Grand complex in St. Louis Park would be good but I believe $800 would only get a studio. Your money will generally go further in an owner-occupied duplex.

I found the move from Chicago to Minneapolis to be great.
