Just Relocated & Having Trouble Meeting People
Hi,
I relocated from New Jersey to Minneapolis at the end of December and find that is extremely difficult to meet people. Everyone seems to stay in their clicks and they are not interested in meeting new people. Coming from the east coast our personalities are more direct and we are outgoing people. However, this does not seem to be acceptable here. I work full time and I am in school and it is still difficult to meet anyone. If anyone has any ideas please let me know because I would love to make it work here but I feel that I should go back to the east coast.
I do not want anyone to take offense to this post but I really need some ideas. I do think the people are nice and polite.
Thanks

It sounds like you're very busy between working a full-time job and attending school. Are there any sports you could get involved in at the community level? Maybe a bookclub, gym, or church? What are your interests???
We've moved several times and it's my guess that people are not purposefully ignoring you. It takes some time to connect but it will begin by looking for opportunties with people that share your same interests. Give it some time and don't get discouraged...just keep looking for opportunities.

I would like to join a gym. Could you recommend one? I also wanted to take some dance classes - ballroom or swing. Thank you for the advice and I am trying not to but it is hard. I feel that my whole life is back home and I do not fit in.

Once spring hits more people will be out and about and it will be easier to meet people.

Nicky - I haven't lived in MN for 2 1/2 years (we're moving back this summer) so I can't recommend a gym. I'd ask for recommendations from co-workers and fellow students or maybe a forum member can help point you in the right direction. Also, I'd call Community Ed in your area and inquire about dance classes. If it is not something they offer they may be able to provide a reference. What area do you live in?
Golfgal is right. Once the weather warms up people will be outside a lot more and you'll have a little easier time. We moved to St. Cloud from Atlanta in January of 2001 and the first few months were rough. However, once Spring rolled around all of my neighbors and their kids were out walking, riding bikes, etc. I've been gone for 2 1/2 years and we still keep in touch. Give it some time...I think you'll grow to love it there.

Everyone is right, we are all huddled up under covers, and staying inside due to the cold, I am not from the area up that way, but I do know we have many good folks living in Minnesota, and once the weather warms up, you will meet so many people, that you will feel like you were back home. I say give us a chance before you give up, we are worth it!!!!!
Take care, keep us informed as to what changes you will be having coming up, and I hope someone in the area will give you the information you need in order to find them friends.
COME ON MINNESOTA, LETS HELP HER OUT!!!!!!!!! LETS SHOW HER SOME MINNESOTA NICE!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice. I have inquired about a gym and have an appointment tomorrow night. Lifetime fitness in Bloomington so I hope it is good. I live in Minneapolis but I am not sure what section it is considered. I know it is not Northern Minneapolis but I have got lost there. I have heard that the spring and summer is a lot of fun here and I am a warm weather person. I will try try to call the community ed center and see how I make out. Will keep everyone posted.

Hi Nicky! One good way is meetin.org: http://www.meetin.org/city/MEETinMIN...NEAPOLIS&Rem=2
Lots of social events for lots of interests. Also you could check out Craigs List > Community > Groups to see if there are clubs/groups that would be of interest to you.
Anyone know if there's a Newcomers Club in Minneapolis?

My son just moved to Mpls and he's looking for work and planning his school career. He's a gamer and already found a D&D group to play with. Once he starts earning money he's going to take karate.
Pursue your interests, take a recreational class, go to church. And also remember that it takes time to get settled and meet new people. My personal experience is that it can take up to 2 years before I have what I consider a close friend, but during those 2 years I'm getting involved in things and meeting people.

Hi Nicky,
I just moved here last week from the SF Bay Area! I am also looking for a dance studio and am having a tough time doing so. I am interested in more jazz classes or hip hop. The community colleges don't have any classes that interest me but my gym Ballys Fitness have a couple I'm going to check out. I live in Edina. What are you doing for work?
