As you know, Fresh and Natural (formally-located on 89th and Penn) is now closed (I saw the sign being removed yesterday.)
There are actions I would like to take to revive the 90th and Penn area, making it community-friendly and keeping the locally-owned, independent businesses in place.
I would love your help.
Mr. Movies' (now closed) owner expressed concern to some of us about the strip mall landlord not making it very easy to rent from him (money, and extra hassels, etc.). I am wondering if we, as citizens and residents of Bloomington, can do anything about this.
ACTIONS
1. This is related strictly to the closing of Fresh and Natural grocery store: Make a list of everything I bought at Fresh and Natural (including brands) and send it to both Bloomington Cub foods and Festival Foods, requesting that they carry those items.
2. Make a list of the businesses on the 90th and Penn corner/area. Contact each of those businesses, even Penn Lake library and the owner of the sports field, about working together to gain public attention (Southtown strip mall seems to do this pretty often):
"Seems like it would make sense to get the businesses themselves together to talk about joint marketing to let people know they are there; maybe set up some time of weekend promotional deal for all of the stores- something to bring people over there petting zoo, etc?"
- Matt J.
3. Let the press know about decided activity (even a monthly, bi-monthly, newsletter or something?), and any other ways we can think of to spread the word.
4. Contact the strip mall owner and express our concerns [The strip mall addressed 8901 Penn Ave S is owned by Marion S. Levine, Levine Investments, 5005 Cedar Lake Rd, St. Louis Park, MN. 55416. It is known as Penn Lake Center.]. By calling the owner, you could
- find out what is planned for the vacant storefronts
- share that you are a supporter of community friendly redevelopment
- ask if you and your neighbors could be part of the revitalization of the mall with your ideas
5. In addition to contacting the owner, pass your concern via email onto
- city officials (City manager, city planners)
- commissioners (Planning commission)
- mayor and council
