I think the original poster just wanted to avoid living someplace where it felt like everyone was part of a transient population that didn't have any roots or attachment to the place (sort of like renters vs homeowners on a larger scale).

The Twin Cities are nowhere near as insular as they were in the 50's and 60's and could probably stand to be even more so based on several comments I've seen here, but its not been overwhelmed by the "I'm only here for five years" crowd. I think Chicago draws most of those.

I totally agree, except that you will, of course, find many people who move(d) to Seattle because they actually want(ed) to live there. In my opinion, however, you will find more transplants to Minneapolis comprised of higher numbers of people who actually want to live in Minneapolis then you would with those transplants who actually want to live in Seattle.

Seattle does have its own culture. You'll find that it is becoming a little more snobby. You have rich, hoity toities from California and other areas taking over. It is the "coffee" culture. Everybody loves and is addicted to coffee (I am too). They all need their cup of coffee in the morning for their "stressful" day. I don't think that you'll find an absence of culture there. It really does have its own unique feel that you won't find anywhere else.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking in your question, but I have my reasons for moving to Minneapolis. Seattle is about the rainiest places you can go to. Actually, it's not the rainiest, but it's cloudy all the time. Summers are beautiful, and as far as natural beauty, Seattle is one of the best. (Although I think that Portland Oregon is much better in that catagory.)

Traffic is a nightmare, especially if you plan on commuting on I5. People think traffic is bad in the twin cities, but it isn't. I'm not sure what you mean by the area not being the same as it was 10 years ago. I haven't really heard that before here. Seattle is very expensive. Seattle is gloomy. Seattle has a major grunge population which irritates me; that went out of style a while ago. We're not in the '90s anymore.

I can give you more info, but tell me more about your reasons for picking Seattle and Minneapolis
You sound totally out of touch. Seattle has massively gentrified in the last decade, and the grunge style you speak of is as rare as bigfoot.

Why did people from the Deep South move to Chicago? If people from Florida are moving to Minnesota, then there must be a good reason. I know that Florida is a mess and to many, Minnesota sounds peaceful in comparison. Yes, it gets cold in MN. I'm aware of how cold it gets, but perhaps weather may not be the biggest factor in a person's moving to another place. Or in some cases, the oppressive humidity of Florida weather combined with hurricanes might be a reason for some people to leave Florida.
There are transplants moving to the greater Mpls-St.Paul area because they find things that they like. Many move there for jobs. Others because of the weather(perhaps they want winter). I think in order to avoid transplants, one would have to move to a place like Michigan where people are leaving the statevery quickly and even there someone might move there.
