I'm aware of how cold it gets, but perhaps weather may not be the biggest factor in a person's moving to another place. Or in some cases, the oppressive humidity of Florida weather combined with hurricanes might be a reason for some people to leave Florida.
There are transplants moving to the greater Mpls-St.Paul area because they find things that they like. Many move there for jobs. Others because of the weather(perhaps they want winter). I think in order to avoid transplants, one would have to move to a place like Michigan where people are leaving the statevery quickly and even there someone might move there.
We moved here from Broward county Florida to raise our son in an area that was more "real". The hurricanes were manageable but the people were from another planet and we were also weary of societal craziness down there. We had other options but the wife was big on moving here. After over a year here I find that I'm indifferent to the weather and the politics but it really isn't as good a fit socially or in terms of employment. It could be the suburb that we live in (or not) but for now I see myself as an impermanent resident.
FWIW my son loves it but he loves anywhere he is.

MRNorthSide is on a distinguished road
There is quite a bit of "transplant invasion", as you say; however, I wouldn't deem it all bad. Minnesota has the fastest growing population in the Midwest, and I have heard that there are over 80 different languages spoken in Minneapolis.

You can often times get Mexican, Cuban, Lebanese, Ecuadorian, Guatemalan, Vietnamese (and the list goes on) or a burger within a single block (Nicollet, Central NE, E Lake St, etc).

I think the diversity is a great thing. The only invaders that I wish would stay home are the gangbangers from Chicago, Gary, Detroit, and Flint.

In response to the thread title, I would say the transplant invasion is great: many of my best friends are transplants. I'm sorry the world changes- my advice: sit out in your front lawn and shake a cane at it.
