Minneapolis 31 murders, 380,000 pop = .00008158
Chicago 429 murders, 2,900,000 pop = .00014793
NYC 419 murders, 8,300,000 pop = .00005048
Los Angeles 301 murders, 3,900,000 pop = .00007717
by that Chicago would be the worst, then Minneapolis, then Los Angeles and New York the least.

I counted wrong. If 31 murders are all Mpls has up to now, then the name "murderapolis" is obsolete. Yes, Mpls is has a higher crime rate than it did in the 1960's and 1970's, but look at places like Milwaukee, Chicago, Gary, Detroit, Cleveland, Atlanta, Birmingham. Minneapolis isn't Disneyland, but as for this year, violence is down a bit from last year.

There is potential that Mpls could finish 2008 off with under 40 murders. A murder is a murder is a murder. With that said, Mpls has seen scarier year. 1995 is a good example.

That is true. The crack epidemic did have something to do with it, but most cities such as Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, LA, and NYC had major problems before the crack epidemic. Mpls just started having high crime rates in the 1990's and it was more sudden.

I don't want to start controversy and get a bunch of conservative religious types breathing down my neck but the argument made for crime in the book "Freakonomics" was pretty good. Basically the studies done found that Roe v. Wade had a profound impact on a decrease in crime in the 90's. Don't take my word for it though, just read the book and form your own opinion.

I am going to disagree, but in doing so in a civilized manner. I do not believe abortion will deter crime. Some staes allow abortion and crime still occurs in startling numbers. You never know. Anyone getting an abortion could be killing off the next scientist or the next community leader.

Most would disagree without reading the book. It sounded wack to me too but it ended up making alot of sense.

My guess is that the book focuses on the premise that children are a product of their environment and some analysis regarding what circumstances are common when people choose abortion.
