Default Minneapolis crime data Jan-June 08

I took the total crimes by each neighborhood from January to June of 2008 per the Minneapolis website (homicide, rape, robbery, aggassault, burglary, larceny, auto theft, arson) and divided it by the neighborhoods population per the 2000 census to find crimes/pop data. I decided to keep the downtown neighborhoods off the list because of the huge weekday working populations would throw the numbers off. Anyway, here are the results:

Top Five Highest crimes/population:
1. Northeast park .156
2. Bottineau .102
3. Nicollet Island .093
4. Hawthorne .088
5. Lowry Hill East .087
6. Longfellow .083
7. Midtown Phillips .067
8. Jordan .066
9. Phillips West .064
10. East Phillips .063

Top Five Lowest crimes/population
1. Kenny .011
2. Hale .012
3. Armatage .013
4. Windom Park .014
5. Lynnhurst .014
6. Waite Park .014
7. Fulton .015
8. Morris Park .015
9. Howe .017
10. Linden Hills .018

Northeast park is obviously skewed because of shoplifting (larceny) at the large retail complex compared to its small number of housing units.

Take larceny off the list and see what happens to your numbers. You might find it interesting.

From Thegonagle's request I have eliminated Larceny and got these totals:

Highest crime/pop
1. Hawthorne .056
2. Jordan .047
3. Webber-Camden .045
4. Bottineau .043
5. East Phillips .039
6. Folwell .037
7. McKinley .036
8. Harrison .036
9. Phillips West .035
10. Ventura Village .035

Lowest crime/pop
1. University of Minnesota .003
2. Lynnhurst .005
3. Hale .006
4. Kenny .006
5. Keewaydin .007
6. West Calhoun .007
7. Fulton .007
8. Minnehaha .007
9. Linden Hills .008
10. Waite Park .008

Alright, that makes a little more sense now. 6 of the 10 highest crime neigborhoods are on the northside. Southside has 3 and Northeast has 1. Most of the low crime neighborhoods are in SW.

The numbers are hard to grasp in that format. I lived in Fulton for 15 years, and I know the rate was low there. Looking at the higher crime areas, they appear to be 10 times or so worse, but is that really high or not?

Here's what I got, Slig, and there were substantial variations from your list. Two attachments, both include downtown neighborhoods, sorted from highest crime per capita to lowest crime per capita (total crimes/ total population). The first attachment includes larceny figures, the second attachment does not include larceny figures in the calculation. Sources used: Minneapolis Neighborhood Profiles population (2000 data); Minneapolis Crime Statistics.

Cool. I just knew something was off about that first data set, because northeast park is hardly what I'd consider high crime. It makes a lot more sense when you eliminate the petty theft at Quarry Center.

Default Attachments color-coded by area/ neighborhood

Regarding the comments about which "sectors" of the city crime is coming from, to put things in better perspective I've attached the above two documents with the addition of being color-coded by area of the city (e.g. Southwest, Phillips, Camden, etc.).

I love that there is a Camden neighborhood (Shingle Creek) that has a lower crime rate than a Southwest neighborhood (King Field), and the fact that there are a number of Camden neighborhoods faring much better than a lot of Calhoun Isle neighborhoods (not to mention the Longfellow, Seward, Marcy-Holmes, and Bancroft 'hoods).

Generally anything east of Lyndale is not considered SW by those who live there. That would exclude Kingfield, Tangletown and Windom.

As I commented earlier - how bad are some of these areas looking past the numbers. Not that bad if you ask me. NE is really a nice area of the city in my book.
