Despite being from Wisconsin, I've never been to the Twin Cities for some reason. Regardless, I'll be yet another Wisconsinite moving out there for better employee opportunities and just better vibes. I'm targeting St. Paul, because from what I've heard, it's kind of like a much bigger Madison, where I spent 5 years. I'd want to live near downtown so I could walk to cafes and generally just be able to do things on foot.

I paid 800 for a studio in downtown Madison, which is about as high as I'm willing to go and probably actually a bit higher. How much do you think a nice-ish apt would run me?

You pay that much for a studio in Madison? Anyways, Saint Paul is set up so that there aren't really neighborhoods where you would walk downtown. Downtown Saint Paul is kind of like a pedestrian island. If you want a neighborhood that is like that, Seven Corners is really your only bet. You could live right downtown, but know that it can be very quiet at times. Things are improving for Saint Paul, but downtown still lacks a grocery store or movie theater. Lowertown is the Saint Paul version of the Warehouse Dist. and has the most housing units. There is a couple restaurants, a farmers' market, Galtier Plaza may reopen its theater soon. I would start looking there.

I think my sister was paying less than $800 for a 5-600 sq. ft 1 BR directly on Grand Ave, which is a St. Paul neighborhood where you can get out and walk to a coffee shop, restaurant, etc. Her place was pretty close to downtown, too.

Rent is pretty much the same throughout the twin cities, but varies much more on how nice of a place you rent.

I think you'll be able to find a place for less than $800 very easily. Especially a studio. I have a friend that renst in Uptown (a very desired area) and her rent on a 1 bedroom is only $725. It has wood floors, vaulted ceilings, and off street parking too. You'll manage fine.

Like someone else commented: You're paying $800 in Madison???
