Question Good Restaurants in Downtown Minneapolis

I'm looking for a good but inexpensive restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. My Mom is comming in to town and I thought it woudl be nice to take her down there for dinner since she hasn't been there before. Nothing upscale, just you typical place where jeans and a T-shirt are the norm.

I'm curious about this too. It seems to me that most of the restaurants downtown are pretty high class and heavy on the wallet. Throw out Chipotle and Jimmy Johns and is there anything economic downtown? Pizza Luce maybe?

I'd recommend the following:

Key's Cafe (at the Foshay on 9th St)
Peter's Grille (I think its open until 7 PM and they offer nightly specials for very low prices (Ribs and Chicken noodle soup, etc...): Peter's is more of a lunch place, so it probably won't be very busy.
Bombay Bistro: Marquette between 8th & 9th: Indian food
Ike's on 6th Street: Its more of a bar, but they serve great burgers
Glueks (6th St between Hennepin & 1st Ave): another bar, but they have great sandwiches, burgers, plus a nice beer hall atmosphere
McCormick & Schmicks (Nicollet & 9th St): Has two happy hours with very inexpensive burgers (around $2.00 - $2.50) as long as you buy a drink
Macy's: Although you mentioned dinner, if you're ever downtown for lunch I'd highly recommend that you check out the Skyroom on the 12th floor--which has a great salad bar (plus soups) and a decent view overlooking downtown

One site to check is the www.downtownjournal.com which has a section on happy hour specials in dt Mpls

Although outside of downtown, I'd also recommend Pizza Nea and Punch over on East Hennepin (the current issue of the DT Journal has a $10 off coupon for Punch).

Economical and downtown don't often go together that well. Lot of places that would do well for lunch, but dinner is another thing.

I might say JD Hoyts, Monte Carlo, Matty Bs, but that is probably stretching reasonable for many people. Personal opinion is you can find a lot better choices for the money outside of downtown without that hassles of parking and such. Loon Cafe is afforadable by most any measure, but I would get in there early before it turns into a sardine can full of drunken fools

Although it's technically in the Elliot Park neighborhood just off of downtown, the Band Box is a great little grease pit to get a good burger and fries on the cheap - and you'd probably get looked at funny if you wore anything but jeans and a t shirt there.

There are actually lots of options for reasonably priced dining in downtown Minneapolis, but as I'm not sure about which price range you consider "reasonable," I shall recommend the following places where you can get tasty meals for under $20/person:

- The Bulldog N.E. (just over the river on Hennepin Avenue and 4th)
- Pizza Luce
- Cafe Brenda
- Harry's on Washington Avenue and 5th Street
- Brit's Pub on 11th and Nicollet
- Key's
- The Local Irish Pub

Hell's Kitchen on 10th, between Nicollet and Marquette.

I repeat... Hell's Kitchen.

Clever and innovative menu. One of the best "road food" restaurants in America, as noted by RoadFood Reviews. The Mahnomin Porridge is one of the richest treats available in these parts. But take it easy if you order it. A little goes a long way...

P.S. Some of the best huevos rancheros I've even tasted...
