Man, BC and BP are nearly one in the same (not including the new neighborhoods up off 610). Just like Camden and BC are the same. I think it's fairly easy to get confused, paricularly when you're riding on a bus, not paying much attention to the streets signs, just looking for landmarks that are familiar with your stop (at least that's what I do).

you'd have to be from "Mayberry" or "leave-it-to-beaver land" to think otherwise.

Sorry, friend, but I think you're giving too much credit to North. Granted, it's not Cabrini, but when comparing the murder, rape, and burglary rate to the actually population of the 4th Precinct, it is up there with the worst.

but I'll admit that I do get bothered by people like yourself that live in the area and take cues from the media by going about focusing on all the negatives (actual or perceived)

The media portrays North better than it is, sorry. In fact, if the news wanted to see how it really is, they would come rent a room for a month in my house on 26th and Penn.

26th is a rough street, and I'm familiar with that specific corner so I can see where you're coming from (but your street/ intersection isn't representative of the n side as a whole, in fact you go a few blocks west of there and things aren't too bad at all). I'm not saying that there aren't areas of north that have crazy high unemployment, high poverty, and high crime - and one thing that worries me - if the nonprofit/ social service sector serving the Northside continues to get cuts left and right by local/ state government and foundations, things are not going to improve in these neighborhoods and will likely only get worse. But, my main point is that the Northside, just like the Southside which has a lot of the same problems/ issues, is a diverse place - and there are some very solid, stable, and yes safe neighborhoods on the northside. We shouldn't be lumping it all into one like you see so many other folks on this board do as the Northside is a huge geographic area, and if you like at crime maps/ stats you will see noticeable differences in the different neighborhoods. I also may have a bias - in working with unemployed folks in the rougher areas of North, the vast majority of people I have interacted with really want to work for a living to support their family and be law-abiding folks. Of course this isn't always the case, and there are some folks that I've run into that I wouldn't want to cross late at night walking on certain intersections, but for the most part I've met a ton of great families and individuals that are working for a better life for themselves and communities (but, the nature of my work would tend to draw those that do want this so there's a lot of folks that I wouldn't have interacted with as well; but a lot of the people that want to do right are those that recently come out of treatment, shelter, and/or incarceration).
Also, in working in areas of South, I've seen some really violent, crazy stuff happen - a lot crazier than anything I've seen on the Northside, and I've been a victim of crime in South and never in North, so maybe I have a bias on this point as well.
And Mr. Northside, yes I am a transplant, and on that note, there are areas of my hometown of Sioux Falls, SD that are more impoverished/ dangerous than most Mpls neighborhoods.

We too are moving to Brooklyn Park to open a business in February 2009. We are looking for a house and an apt to rent. The business will be next door to Target Headquarters. What area should we look at to rent? $$ is really not an issue at this time, we do NOT want a long commute at all. We are from Florida and need to get use to just snow on the ground, let alone driving on it! Would rather live as close to work as possible. Need very safe area! Thanks so much!

The only bad area I hear about in BP is Zane Boulevard.

Everyone I've ever know who has left Brooklyn Park (and areas adjacent) will never go back. It's commonly refered to by people in the know as the "Flying Lead District".
It's just that it's not popular to mention that fact on the ten o'clock news. Just like it would be poor tast to call the Cedar Riverside towers by the other names they're known by, either "Crack Stacks" or "The Ghetto in the Sky".
For a factual correlation, just check out the weekly "Shotspotter" maps put out by the city of Minneapolis, or the crime maps that are very readily searchable. There are certain areas that look like a bad rash, week after week and month after month.
I'll avoid that area, and I'll continue to feel free to call it dangerous.

Brooklyn Park is harmless.
One thing to remember about crime: it usually happens to people that know the people doing the crime, weather it be break ins, burgalry, shootings, etc.
You just have to be smart- You hear a lot of the stories of the 2 testosterone fillled guys stumbling home from the bars and get mugged from 5 teenage thugs. Well, don't be stupid, that;s just asking to get into trouble. Dont walk around at night-even with a group. Dont go into neighborhoods you are unfamiliar with. It is easy to avoid trouble, but many times people fail to do this and get themselves into trouble. Its sad to say that they only way to avoid getting mugged or shot is to turn your back, but thats how it is.
I used to ride my bike around BP at all times of the day with my cousins, and never ran into any type of problems. I saw problems, but we steered clear and avoided the situations.
Most thugs who steal things only steal things from people they know, and they know what they are stealing. They also shoot at people they know. Thugs dont just get out a gun and shoot random people, when it does happen its just from crossfire or richochet.
Most thugs know that the innocent people KNOW there is surrounding crime, so most people take measures like Alarm Systems, Locks, and Self Defense- Mace, Knives and Guns. Thugs arent going to break into a home if they think the owner has a handgun next to his bed, has state of the art locks or alarm- theyll break into the thugs moms house around the block and take her TV to sell.
Thats how it works, dont be afraid of a few dirty criminals

Is this supposed to be some type of comedy routine?

Please quit spouting off at the mouth - somebody might actually be taking you seriously.
Blinky is absolutely right. Camden Northsider has some good points, but people from MN have all heard terms like Flying Lead District, Drive-by City, and Crooklyn Dark - and we know that BP has plenty of gangsters and thugs.

I read a few pages of this thread not reading everything. I'll give you my view of Brooklyn Park.
First off I'm legally blind I take the bus almost every day and I MUST live near bus lines and I've taken weird times at night, hell I used to ride my bike home @ 2:30am from blockbuster down to zane and stuff.
Anyway, I've lived in both Point of America and Widsor Gates apartment complex's. Zane ISN'T THAT BAD, I've been offered drugs numerous times and stupid petty stuff like that but I've never had any problems with people.
Yes there is a heavy police presence yes Zane has a lot going on but seriously it isn't that bad keep to yourself and your fine. But after dark don't go to the conviance store or any of that area off of yates (by Point of America) I've been in there I went for a haircut and was looked at like I was crazy for being in a store meant for blacks. Not trying to be racist or anything but it was very, very, very "urban"
I now own a house off of 85th ave its not bad here (taxes suck) basiclly if you keep to yourself and what not you'll be fine in the 5 or so years I've lived here I've had zero problems with people I've seen things and what not but I don't let it bother me there is always something going on in this city if your going to worry about than move to the country.
Thats my 2 cents.
