You mean "Trick or Treat". At least that's what kids are supposed to say when they see a homeowner coming at them with a bowl of candy.
Some just stand there with a blank look on their face.
Some come to the door after you've turned off the light.
There really is no right answer to your question. It's whatever time frame you come up with. We usually go from 6:30 to 9:00. That's early enough to get some of the small kids and still enough for the older ones.
Front light on - open for business.
Front light off - I'm either out of candy or otherwise not participating.

I don't know of any area around the metro that has set times to Trick or Treat. Usually around here kids start when it gets dark and are usually done by about 8:30-9:00.

I like to pass out big candy bars. I open for business at 5:30 and I close as soon as I get more than three teenager sans costume in a row. They shouldn't get a big Butterfinger if they aren't dressed in costume. This usually occurs around 7:45 and then the front light goes off.

Side question, did anyone else accidentally leave their jack-o-lantern outside after trick or treating was over and woke up the next morning to see it was smashed? I did, ha.

I'm just happy they waited until all the trick or treating was over to do it, I was going to throw it away the next day anyways.

My neighbors' Jack-O-Lantern is still in great shape! This is the first time she's ever carved one, and she's still enjoying having a candle in it even this evening! She moved here from the Middle East and is enjoying learning and participating in all of our American customs.
