Question 1. Where did you live in minnesota?
A: I lived in South Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Fridley, and Blaine.

Question 2. Where did you move to? and why?
A: I moved to Omaha, Nebraska, to be with a man. An old buddy I reconnected with on Facebook.

Question 3. What do you miss most about minnesota?
A. I miss EVERYTHING. Even the bitter winters. I miss the friendliness, the things to do, my friends, the smell of downtown, WORKING downtown, the food, the drives up north, the smell of the wind, fire pits in the backyard, the accent, the preppy Fox Racing boys, the list goes on and on.

Question 4. What do you miss the least?
A. The commute. The bitter winters. But that's it.

Question 4. What do you miss the least?
1) Born and raised on Lake Minnetonka - both Mound & Excelsior.
2) Moved to Oklahoma in 2003 to be closer my dad's side of the family and because I wanted a change after graduation.
3) Nature, lakes, the environmentally friendly attitude (in Oklahoma people are still allowed to burn their trash - yuck), 4 distinct seasons, my moms side of the family & childhood friends.
4) The competitive materialistic attitude that tends to happen in the Lake Minnetonka area, the hustle & bustle of living in the suburbs of a big city.

I miss Minnesota enough that we are moving back next week, but to Chaska. I'm hoping the small town feel will be more comfortable for us.

daboywonder2002, please consider my advice as one who worked in DC (actually at the Penatgon) for 8 1/2 years in the 90s. The Cities are the Promised Land by comparison.

Yes, you have the museums and all but in terms of day to day living (taxes, public schools, housing, commuting, crime, cost of living), DC has nothing on The Cities. As you have correctly stated, you will have a better standard of living on 50K in MSP than making 80K in the DC area.

Yes, the weather may be better sometimes (autumn back east can't be beat, IMHO ) but summer sucks (MN is definitely cooler and drier and nicer ) and winter (do we even have to go there ) and spring is about the same in both places. So in the end, weather-wise, it's a wash (six of one, half a dozen of the other).

However, economically, the advantage goes to The Cities.

Quality of life - The Cities.
Crime - The Cities.
Public schools - The Cities.

One more thing, I'm from Philly too, so I understand feeling "the pull" but the best cure for that is to remember why you left Philly in the first place.

Nothing ever changes. You can leave, literally for years, and go back for a visit and the same people are still hanging out on the same corners, stoops, porches, bars, or whatever....doing nothing.

You wanted better than that and when you saw the opportunity, you took advantage of it. Believe me, I understand missing black people sometimes, (man, look at me, I'm up here in Alaska! I know what it's like to be the only one) but in the big scheme of things, remember what's really important, you're making a better future for you and yours. You can always go home for a visit. It's only a 2 1/2 hour direct flight for you, any time of year. For me, it's an 8 hour flight.....during the summer.

I don't tell you this to make light of your feelings but to give you a different perspective.

Personally, I can't wait until I can relocate my family to The Cities. We first visited in 2009, fell in love and we haven't found any other place that compares and believe me, I've looked.

If you ever want to talk, send me a PM.

Have a blessed day

^I watch that show "Property Brothers" as much as I can, and I noticed that a shack in Toronto fetches at least $400K! I don't get what that's all about!
