I found this in "the Rake's" March 2007 issue about last year: "By year’s end, Minneapolis had recorded sixty homicides, thirteen more than in 2005 and the highest number since 1996, when eighty-eight people died violently in the city. Twenty-nine—nearly half—of last year’s killings occurred in a six-square-mile area of North Minneapolis, from Glenwood Avenue north to Dowling, and from the city’s western border to the Mississippi River on the east (minus the North Loop neighborhood in the southeastern corner)."
I'll add that Minneapolis has a population of 350,000. When you look at the data for the murders in the city; most of the victims murdered in North MPLS were 15-28 year olds I noticed. Unfortunately, this seems to point to gang related activity.
I didn't find the data for St. Paul's 2006 murder rate (population of 280,000) but I remember reading that it was less than half of Minneapolis'.

"Unfortunately, this seems to point to gang related activity."
Or you could say "fortunately" because since most of them are gang related, that means that unless you are a gang member, you are pretty safe.

Comparing Minneapolis to Pittsburgh might be fair, almost the same size and the north side is probably the worst area. With that said Pittsburgh has more crime and murders, about 60 or so murders a year. And Pittsburgh even has a lower minority population so Minneapolis cant be all that bad. At least its just one side of town.

I am wondering if the Mpls-St.Paul area is as violent as people say. I have considered moving to Minneapolis as a teenager as well as other places such as Texas, Alaska, Seattle, Denver, Wisconsin, and other places I think might be nice.(I am now 20 years old turning 21 in 28 days.). I have heard good things about Minnesota as a child from my father and I hear good things from other people, but I also hearing about the "murderapolis" nickname, which is somewhat ironic because I live in the metro Atlanta area and on the news murder is frequently mentioned.(I think Atlanta is much more violent than Minneapolis). I need some more insight about Minnesota.

The Twin Cities has about 3.5 million people in the whole metro area. We had something like 88-90 murders last year here. I have no idea how that compares to other metro areas. I've never heard of "murderapolis" before; but I do know that the general public here is concerned about that high of a murder rate. It's something we aren't used to here; and even if you consider that 1/3 to 1/2 of those deaths are gang-related it just is unacceptable for this part of the country.
