Default First time homebuyers, Help us figure out the neighborhood

Renting a house in Hale Page, and now able to buy a home due to the market. I'm questioning the neighborhood of Powderhorn, more closely the Central neighborhood (of Powderhorn).

I've looked at the crime maps of recent and past weeks.
We are in the 3rd Precinct of the crime map.

Basing information off of the crime maps, obviously there is a lot more action during the summer than there has been now that the seasons have changed. So as my fiance and I drive past, the neighborhoods are relatively quiet.
Also, the crimes happen towards the NW corner of Central neighborhood and the house we are looking at is in the SE corner of Central. From the crime maps, the activity dissipates in that diagonal direction, however crimes of all types still occur, even now.

A little about the home: Large, one of the nicest on the block, has an attached garage that you access from alley.

So, my question is have you lived around there? How was it renting/being a homeowner there?

OR

Would you buy a home there if the price was perfect and so was the house for you plus a significant other and dog?

Thank you so much,
C + L

The intersection of 38th and Chicago is notorious for crime, although the neighborhood has taken initiatives to improve it in recent years. I'd probably consider living between 33rd and 37th st if the block looked pretty well kept and the price was right. I'm still more of a fan of the Corcoran/Standish side of the neighborhood because it's a little quieter and I like being close the light rail. You're looking in a cool part of town though. I've been in Powderhorn since late April and love it. Good luck.

price is right, house is awesome house is east of portland but west of chicago, closer to 37th than 38th. Just really frustrated, our budget is sub 120k.

It really does depend on the block and its organization. Since you would have a car and an attached garage, you shouldn't have too much a problem on your own property. The major dilemma is if the area turns into a prison with your home as an island within it. Simple truth is...living in that area will expose you to crime. You have to weigh that fact against the house that you will get for your money.

I see 66 listings in south Minneapolis in the 90-120k range. I would guess only a small portion of those are move in ready though, so once you find an attractive property you should probably go for it.

This neighborhood is a far cry from the Hale-Page-Diamond Lake area. And to answer your question - no, you can likely find more options/ house for the money, and get into a lot safer neighborhood, by looking in neighborhoods in Camden right now - for instance, go here and click on 'real estate listings'.

I think it might be MLS listing #3598782 on the 3600 block of Chicago Ave closer to 37th St.
