I'm 19 and grew up in Maple Grove and LOVED it. (Aside from the lack of diversity and slight tendency of people to be snobby, of course). My boyfriend grew up in Apple Valley and he loved it there, as well. We have debates on which is better so I can see you dilema!I think they are very similar in terms of what they have to offer. I'd suggest to go drive and walk through the areas and see which feels more like home to you. Also talk to some random people from the area to get a sense of the culture. (Of course you never know if the person you happen to meet is "typical" or not).I'd say they about a hour's drive apart and equidistant from the metro area. Both are lovely. Good luck! p.s. Apple Valley has the Minnesota Zoo and the Mall of America. Maple Grove has [had, at least] cows.

Apple Valley is very upscale, has less crime, and is a fast growing-young community. Great schools, and there is a park in a half mile of every home. and you are 20 minutes from Minneapolis and St. Paulm MN. 10-12 minutes from Mall of America.
