Default Snob appeal / Stereotypes of different suburbs?

As of late, I've been noticing that people around the twin cities are very partial to their particular areas! I'm a Madison, WI transplant - I've lived here for about 3 years. We (in Madison) had the same thing- the west side / Middleton & other west suburbs were considered to be the yuppies, and the east side was considered more blue collar and ethnic. But wow, I was at dinner last night with a few friends, and people seem REALLY opinionated! I live in a pretty neutral area - Just on the border of Eagan / Bloomington, south of Mall of America (moved there vs. Bloomington because it seems a lil cleaner, and is just as close). However, What are the stereotypes associated with suburbs such as Eagan, Eden Prairie, and West Bloomington? I seemed to have some resentment directed towards me from a friend from Anoka county, because we're just a bunch of "snobs", apparently? I've heard of "suburb rivalry" before, but this was heated! ... haha, maybe he just had one too many drinks, but wow, even my fathers side of the family (all from greater Chicagoland) never really got that opinionated about any particular part of the metro - except for the dreaded (bad) part of the south side. Just curious!

-Andrew

IF you're from EP, Wayzata, Edina...You're probably a cake-eater. Get over it. Its better than having the rep of being a lazy bum

Eagan used to be pretty well stereotyped that way too, so there's still some remnants of that left.

For the most part though, the northern suburbs don't get as much attention or money as the southern and especially western burbs, so your Anoka friend would have probably acted that way no matter where south of the river you live.

Well yeah that's the interesting part -I always thought Bloomington/Eagan to be pretty much one in the same - Large bedroom communities of both cities. But apparently, they're (as mentioned) cake eater suburbs now? Interesting- I always knew that the northern suburbs were kind of frowned upon by my friends... But I didn't know that where I lived was considered so... uppity. Haha, I guess the fact that i'm parked between a 5 series BMW and late model Lexus, and my car is a Volvo, at my apartment complex (AND im 22....) speaks for itself. Yup, cake eater. Oh well. Lol.

Where you're living isn't as stigmatized anymore, there's definitely places better known for being uppity. Most of that stereotype is moving southwest.

Andrew,if you do move to Eden Prairie, then don't live in the ghetto of EP which is the Eden Lake Elementary School area (basically, any apartment complex in a 2 miles radius)! Darn,my parents are just upper middle class and not the upper class! I am just a cupcake eater!

Haha - Thats the interesting part that makes EP very similar to Eagan- There is kind of an icky part, and a really nice part. But, I suppose that's every town.

I'm from the northern suburbs originally and we hated all the uppity suburbs with money growing up (Wayzata, Minnetonka, Edina, Eden Prairie, North Oaks, Stillwater, etc.) The rivalry kind of stemmed from playing them in youth sports and then in high school. I would say jealously had alot to do with it but also we were annoyed by their pretentiousness. Recently I lived in Eagan for a year and I noticed the snobbiness alot from the people I came in contact with who were from Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Lakeville, Edina, etc. and it reaffirmed it.
