Why are Minneapolis area mansions so bland?
I've been looking at different properties and realized the "premier" MN properties are very plain / bland..
Why is that?
If you're going to build a 18,000sf plus home why not cover it in 24k gold, Louis XIV style, etc like in other areas i.e. NY, CA, FL, Las Vegas, Scottsdale, AZ, Dallas, etc, etc.. These homes would need $5M worth of updates... They're kind of embarassing to entertain in..., and these are the largest on the market.

Well most of the 10,000sf plus homes (I used 18,000sf plus above) are found in Waysata, Orono, etc... There are some nice old homes many even 10,000sf +/- in N. Minneapolis area but your not surrounded by enough of them and again they're very old and dated..

What are your thoughts about the upper echelon homes in Edina and Minneapolis around Lake of the Isles? They aren't 18,000 sq ft but at least they are varied in appearance and have more character.

Yes, a little more but its weird that in the last six months of viewing homes not one has a Royal-Italian -Versace type look easily found in other areas. Plus with home prices dropping so quickly why not go for the larger sf for what a 6,000sf home cost two years ago. The only additional is taxes and the obvious utilities, other than furnishings.

Why, easy, most Minnesotan's have more taste than that-they aren't into the flashy "look at me I'm rich" status thing here. Besides, most people that are buying 6+million dollar houses tend to build what they want, not buy existing.

Flashing wealth is no longer in fashion... not that it ever was in MN. Where was I reading that? Startribune?

No kidding, I think if I had $6,500,000 to blow on a mansion I'd probably just pay off the $110,000 left on my house and use the rest of the money to rehab 100 homes and commercial buildings in south Minneapolis. I'd leave the Powderhorn community looking squeaky clean for years to come
Otherwise, if you weren't such a cheapy about it, you could try and buy off the Lakewood cemetery, then use a thousand helicopters to transport it out to the country somewhere and then develop that land into multi-million dollar condos with water-sealed underground parking for all of your and your residents' exotic vehicles. With total respect to those who have passed on and are buried there, that chunk of land between Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet is worth a FORTUNE.
